One of the many pictures in my room is one of my high school marching band – senior year, the year I was drum major. I sometimes recall those times, and one of my favorite memories – During school hours, we had one period for band. Often, especially in the early part of the school year, assimilating incoming freshmen into the band, we would practice marching around the streets of the neighborhood, playing the marches we all had to memorize. The fun was the little kids who were still at home, running around, saying “there’s a parade!” and sitting on the steps watching us, sometimes clapping. I liked doing that. I wonder if any of those kids grew up and were in the band?

The inherent problem with Trump wanting to withhold money from Amtrak, or NPR, or any of the many things he does not like is this: The president has no authority to unilaterally withhold, or “impound,” money the legislature has appropriated. – I rest my case. He is trying it, though.

The newest New Yorker mag has a good story about Amelia Earnhardt and her round the world trip with navigator Noonan. Her famous husband pushed her for fame; Noonan was a known drunk, and she, not really a very good pilot, had taken things like their maritime radio OUT OF THE PLANE to save weight for fuel! She was not good at Morse Code . . . At one point, they landed in Africa 100 miles off course! They were warned not to try it, but did . . . some who knew her say she was more of a daredevil than a good pilot.

And, it’s official: there is no more amateurism in college sports: — College sports changed radically Friday night. Schools will begin directly paying their athletes in less than a month, thanks to a legal settlement that was officially approved in federal court Friday. – of course, most of this will go to football and basketball players, mostly men. Another thing this will do is make it harder for a walk-on to make a team.
