A good snapshot of Trump’s economic policies so far:  His administration’s signature legislation delivers the largest Medicaid cuts in U.S. history, threatening to strip coverage from 15 million people while taking food assistance from children, seniors, and people with disabilities. His erratic trade policy has worsened the cost-of-living crisis, amounting to an average $1,300 tax increase per household this year. And as the Republican shutdown drags on, essential services are halted and paychecks paused for hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

It is illegal, under domestic and international law, to deliberately target civilians who are not directly participating in hostilities — even if they are suspected criminals.  As a former merchant marine officer, I can sympathize with the attacks but be appalled at the lack of respect for international waters and laws, not to mention Trump claiming the right to murder people, even despicable ones.  What about the drug dealer on the corner here?  Will Trump’s troops have the order to shoot on sight?  I sailed for months with a ship that used the Old Bahama Channel, which runs close along the N. coast of Cuba.  We had our “international” rights, but there was tension; sometimes planes from Cuba buzzed us and we thought we could get shot at.

Trump is mainly about money:  Since taking office, Trump has unilaterally impounded funds appropriated by Congress, frozen funds for scientific research, canceled grants for infrastructure largely in Democratic-run states, fired tens of thousands of government workers, shuttered whole agencies and attempted to shutter others. And he’s ramped up these practices, which range from provocative to outright illegal, during the shutdown. – Huffpost. – not to mention all the ways he uses the Presidency to enrich himself and his kids.  Got your $400. Trump gold sneakers yet?

And more about private money:  Dozens of executives and companies have donated to fund the construction of President Trump’s $300 million ballroom, as many of them eye favorable policy, reduced scrutiny or approval for major deals from the White House. – Gee, they really want something?  This is not out of their innate sense of goodness?

Here’s a thought:  Public school lunches should be free.  Why?  School is required (well, used to be before right wingers argued for home schooling at least) and few kids can go home and back for lunch; in most cases, Mom isn’t there to help you anyway.  So, if the “law” forces your kid to be at school for lunch, shouldn’t they provide it?  I am pleased to report that this is true in California.  I thought about donating to our local school for kids who can’t pay for lunch but found out that this is unnecessary.  And yeah, when I was a boy in the 50’s, we went home for lunch.  Our elementary school did not have a lunchroom.  We got little bottles of milk (you could pay extra for chocolate) at snack time.  Mom was home all the time.  Things change.

In the original ending for the movie Casablanca, Rick rides off with Ilsa.  They changed it because they thought the censors would not permit Rick to do that with married Ilsa.  The ending line between Rick and the Inspector was dubbed in after the movie was done.
