Update 05/03/2026

A great businessman?  Ars Technica reported on the issues swirling around Trump’s meme coin, including suspicions of insider trading and a 93% drop in value from last year that’s led to billions of dollars in investor losses.  The Trump family and insider trading?  Heresy!

One result of the attack on the dinner in DC is that there might be a push to check passengers boarding trains.  I have ridden several, and there is no baggage check at all.  This is great for just getting on board, etc., but is it wise?  One issue is that train stations, like Union Station in L.A. are not set up for a security check.  And who will pay for that?  We all pay for the airlines’ security, but I’ll bet the R’s will want Amtrak to pay for its own, adding yet another nail in the coffin of passenger rail in the U.S.

No Surprise Dept.:  Supreme Court approves Texas new districts. Now Florida?  Here we go again, with the redistricting battles.  A true Court would, imho, say that no redistricting can be done between census years.  Is this just coincidence — so far, all of the states talking about redistricting, after the Supreme Court decision to gut the Voting Rights Act, are Southern states.

Didja Know: That years ago, in the Sears catalogue, you could buy:

A House

Bees, as well as other animals.

Heroin (legal then – sold as a way to get off morphine, which Civil War soldiers got addicted to)

Trump really does hate windmills, or he wants less renewable energy and more oil use:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration announced two more payouts Monday for energy companies to walk away from U.S. offshore wind projects under development.

Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind have agreed to end their offshore wind leases in exchange for reimbursements totaling nearly $900 million. – and that is your money, friends!

More and more I see/read about Republicans basically saying that protest is unpatriotic, un-American, etc.  Read the first amendment.  Read your history, especially the parts about our founding fathers and their followers being protesters.

I thought this was a joke at first – then, I remembered that our president is a joke.

From MSNOW:  Like some personality cult, State Department eyes plan to add Trump’s image to passports.  If you’re an American planning to get a passport and don’t want the president’s face on it, you might want to hurry.

Never happened before:

During their respective first years in office, Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Joe Biden issued precisely zero pardons. In Donald Trump’s first, he pardoned just one person, the Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio. In the first year of his second term, Trump pardoned roughly sixteen hundred.

And yes, many of those pardoned “just happened” to pay someone for it.

More:  Pardon seekers and their families are often shelling out million-dollar-plus fees to lobbyists and consultants who tout their connections with the President, in hopes of securing the mercy of the White House. “Every one of my clients is being approached by these scumbags,” one prominent criminal-defense lawyer told our reporter. “They say who they’re friends with. It’s often White House counsel. And they ask for a million dollars and another million dollars if it’s successful.” – quotes from The New Yorker

In 2010, Congress passed a law requiring Amtrak and others to allow firearms to be transported as long as they are checked.  Part of the “guns everywhere” world that the NRA envisions.

……………..

Supremes are slowly killing the Voting Rights Act – all republicans, of course.  And I worked for 8 years for one of the largest election departments in the country –Maricopa County, AZ.  I go back to hanging chads, folks, and was one of the first to transmit vote counts directly from a voting machine to the central computers downtown.  I also partook in redistricting battles, and signature verification of petitions.

Something else to worry about:   Compared to 1988: Many of humanity’s most important crops contain fewer vitamins and minerals. These charts show how much nutrients could decline by 2040.

 Why? Surgingconcentrations of carbon in the atmosphere, largely caused by burning fossil fuels, is changing the way plants grow. That could cause a hidden hunger epidemic.

As for that “86 47” thing, recall that “86” does not mean “kill.”  It means “get rid of” or “discard,” or “throw away.”  Of course, there was a right-winger who posted “86-46” about Joe Biden, but that was, of course, “different.”  Worse is how the DOJ has become a tool for Trump.

Who owns America?  From Robert Reich:

Over 92 percent of the value of all the shares of stock owned by Americans is owned by the richest 10 percent. More than half is owned by the richest 1 percent.

…………………..

Not a good look: All 6 conservative justices attended Trump’s white-tie state dinner

That the court’s conservatives showed up to the dinner — despite insisting on their independence.  No, you say, the Supreme Court is not political!??

………………..

Share with your Republican friends, if you have any:

At this point, we could talk about the historical pattern over the past several decades, in which budget deficits have grown by massive amounts under every Republican administration (Reagan, Bush 1, Bush 2 and Trump), while shrinking under every Democratic administration (Clinton, Obama and Biden), even while the political conventional wisdom suggested that the GOP was the party of “fiscal responsibility.” – from MSNOW

Wouldn’t the fastest horse still win the Kentucky Derby if the jockeys were forbidden to whip the horses?  And if you say “it doesn’t hurt them,” then why do it?

…………………

A lot of buzz here in SoCal about the price of World Cup tickets.  More and more, important sports events are exclusively for two kinds of people – the rich and super rich.

Q:  Why was the math book sad?

A:  It had too many problems.

My ad in the Humor Times came out in print this week, and the online ad continues!  I like to support that publication.

By International laws and all logical thinking, a naval blockade is an act of war.

Just saw that a 23-1 shot won the Kentucky Derby.  I think that’s good, in the sense that the unexpected can happen in sports (if horse racing is a sport) and that’s one reason we/I watch them.

And again, I saw a website advertising real photos of Vikings . . .  photos of Vikings . . .

Hazy day here.  Will warm up a bit soon.  Starting a large, home improvement project tomorrow, so a large disturbance in the force here.  Sorry, it starts on May 4th, you see.

All take care,
