A final word from the World Cup: President Donald Trump was hit with a “sustained chorus of boos” as he walked onto the field of MetLife Stadium for the World Cup trophy presentation on Sunday, according to a White House pool report from HuffPost’s S.V. Dáte.

FBI shifts immigration agent cases to HSI after recent fatal shootings, sources say
HSI is an arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, both of which are overseen by the Department of Homeland Security, meaning the immigration enforcement agency would effectively be investigating incidents involving its own agents.

A new Republican spending bill is due up for a vote: Some are concerned that there are no spending cuts to balance out a bill that sets aside $73 billion in new military spending, most of it earmarked to help pay for the war against Iran. Wait, how much do those damn kids on food stamps get? Can’t we cut that some more?

Even after the WC finish, a writer on ESPN says that Messi “is the best male athlete in the history of the world.” Please. He might be the best soccer player (not Pele?), but he plays one sport where you can’t use half your body. For me, I would nominate any Gold Medal Olympic winner in the decathlon. As a reminder, that is ten different events. Ten.

Trump is raising tariffs on Canada? I thought the Supreme Court said he could not adjust the rates, as “tariffs are taxes.”

Trump’s approach to elections, per MSNOW, in part: The genius of the current structure is its decentralization — there are more than 8,000 separate election systems spread over 50 states and localities, a tall order for even the most determined hacker. One centralized system residing on servers in Washington would be an easier target — and much more tempting. The truth is that the president doesn’t really want to protect the existing system, he wants to own it.

Some years ago, when crypto was a new, seemingly exciting new investment opportunity, I asked our investment advisor (stocks and bonds, etc.) about it. He said he had one word for it:
NO !!

I dislike it when pro athletes are under contract for another season or more, but want to hold out, or not report to training camp, until they get more money. Fulfill your contract, then ask for more. I notice that when an athlete has a bad year, they don’t offer to refund some of their pay.

From Wash.Post Friday:
| The Trump administration is weighing military action in Mali, officials said. |
- Why? To target an al-Qaeda-affiliated group known as JNIM. If approved, Mali would be the eighth nation where President Donald Trump has ordered strikes during his second term.
- In related news: The House advanced a long-shot effort to tee up billions in additional funding for the Iran war. The plan has drawn backlash from some Republicans.
- One more thing: The U.S. signed a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia yesterday.

How gun dealers with serious past violations got licenses back under Trump –CNN
Saw this headline but didn’t want to read the article . . . just what we need, more guns!

We have a new hybrid SUV and after a few months have calculated our mileage as between 31.6 (my calc) or 32.2 (the car’s calc). Most of our trips are short, to wit: we have had the car over 6 months and have 1446 miles on it. Of course, part of the reason is we are retired, and most everything we need is close by.

Profit off the presidency? Nah! The New York Times revealed how Donald Trump Jr.’s investment firm, 1789 Capital, has gone from managing a few hundred million dollars to overseeing more than $3 billion in assets in just two years. And: Many of the companies linked to the firm have directly benefited from Trump administration policies or have been on the receiving end of large government contracts.

From Robert Reich: A new Government Accountability Office study, released Wednesday, found that MacDonalds, Walmart, and Amazon — three of America’s largest employers, with billions in profits — are also among the top employers of workers who earn so little they have to rely on food stamps to put food on the table and Medicaid to obtain health coverage.
Yet according to the latest data, MacDonalds pays its CEO $18.2 million a year, Walmart pays its CEO $27.4 million, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is the second-richest person in America.

I don’t profess to understand much about the proposed Paramount/Warner Bros. merger, but I do know that they don’t just make movies. They control a great deal of media, and concentrating it in a few hands is dangerous. – Oh, for the return of delivered newspapers!!

Just accidentally read something about the killing of Martin Luther King and I wonder how many people today know this:
In 1994, Loyd Jowers, a restaurant owner, publicly began claiming that he had been part of a conspiracy to assassinate King and that Ray was a scapegoat. In a Memphis civil trial in 1999, a jury unanimously concluded that Jowers was liable for the assassination, that King was the victim of a conspiracy, and that various U.S. governmental agencies had conspired to murder King and frame Ray for the assassination. – I remember Jowers owned a café right across the street from the motel . . . and an employee years later, saying on “that day” Jowers had come in the back door, holding a rifle, and exclaiming, “We got him!”

A bit hot here today, but sunny.
I am worried about Trump interference in the fall election. It concerns me that many who know more about national politics are too; some suggest that all we can do is defeat ALL Republicans, at all levels, no matter who they are, and do it by wide margins!

With that sunny thought, I say,
Take care and God help us, Saul!
