Read an article which suggests that when you make up a sub sandwich, instead of cutting the roll and opening it like a book, you cut it all the way through, so you can layer the insides evenly, without them bunching up on one side. Makes sense to me. I will try it, although we get most of our subs made by others.

Just saw that the NCAA March Madness basketball college tournament will expand to 76 teams. Why not 100, that’s a nice, even number? No, wait. Let’s have every Division I team in the tournament; we can cancel the season and just start with the playoffs!

One thing that Ted Turner is famous for is what some call “narrowcasting,” that is, having a TV channel devoted to one thing, like a 24-hour news channel, but also the Weather Channel, and ESPN sports, etc. I recall also, that he was one of the few celebrities who would talk about population control, a topic we seem to have avoided for a long time.

A question from MSNOW:
Is the Trump administration — led by a convicted felon who has freed violent insurrectionists, used his pardon powers to free a prolific drug trafficker and aided multiple people accused of and convicted of sex crimes — in position to credibly accuse anyone else of unleashing danger in America? For me, uhhhh, no!

You can’t make this up:
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy dismissed concerns about spiraling gas prices ($4.55 a gal today) caused by the Trump administration’s war with Iran as he urged American families to hit the road for their summer vacation.

Friday: Trump says that the ceasefire in Iran still holds, although we bombed some military targets and still have a naval blockade, both of which are acts of war.

The Virginia Supreme Court decision on boundaries is a major setback for the Dems. I think it will set off more battles all over the country. This was supposed to happen only once every ten years. And, yes, you could say that in a perfect world, we should not have to consider race in redistricting. But our world is far from perfect, and, alas, often headed backwards in history.
As in this quote from MSNOW: For generations, states redrew congressional district lines after the decennial census. There were limited exceptions, but in nearly all of those instances, mid-decade redistricting only happened when courts told states that their maps were unlawful and needed to be redone. In my years with a major elections department, I took part in doing some redistricting.

From Huffpost: Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has “good news” to share with you: As a result of her oversight at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 4.5 million people have been kicked off food stamps in the past year. Rollins bragged about the move in an appearance on Newsmax Thursday night.
“The good news: In just one year alone, we’ve already moved 4.5 million people off of SNAP,” Rollins said, referring to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, as she predicted more hunger to follow. “We’re going to be pulling more and more people off,” she added.
Damn those poor kids wanting food! Who the hell do they think they are?

Trump lashed out and was rude to a female reporter – again. With his history, including payoffs of a porn star and a conviction for sexual abuse, how can ANY woman vote for him?

It took years, but Justice Roberts gets his way (from Huffpost):
As a young lawyer in the Reagan administration, Chief Justice John Roberts fought tooth and nail to oppose the 1982 reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act. – We will go back to the post-Civil War era, when he South erected barriers to prevent blacks from voting.
Forty-four years later, Roberts joined the majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito in Louisiana v. Callais that last week effectively overturned that 1982 reauthorization.

For basketball fans:
I saw a clip of that elbow Wemby threw and he should have been suspended.
Palming, or carrying the basketball is still illegal (I checked), but everyone does it, at all levels, almost never called. It creates an advantage for the offensive player. Your hand should never be on the bottom half of the ball while dribbling.
Below is a picture of Caitlin Clark carrying the ball:

There was yet another story about a high school student getting accepted to many colleges, in this case 65. Terrible. Why bother, even if you can afford it, to apply to so many? Bragging rights? Stupid. If you can’t narrow your preferred colleges down more than that, you should not even go.

Trump say he will suspend the gas tax. Again, the power to tax is up to Congress.

Note to Republicans: U.S. household debt, including mortgages, credit cards, auto loans and student loans, reached an all-time high of $18.8 trillion. And: Inflation accelerated in April to an annual rate of 3.8%, the highest since May 2023, as the Iran war pushed up energy costs and raised prices across the economy.

On our way to the Republican dream of being the only country with no passenger trains! Get in line on the highways, everybody!
Trump’s budget would result in the following year-over-year drops:
- Amtrak National Network: $4.8 billion → $1.45 billion
- Amtrak NEC: $2.0 billion → $600 million
- High-Speed Rail Grants: $900 million → $0
- Federal-State Partnership-FSP (total): $3.8 billion → $1.4 billion
These reductions represent a dramatic step backward just as states and regions are delivering new service, modernizing aging infrastructure, and responding to unprecedented demand for rail. Slashing funding to proven grant programs pulls the rug out from projects already underway. Of course, federal subsidies to the airlines will continue.
